Kathgarh Mahadev Temple

Kathgarh Mahadev Temple, located in the Kathgarh village near Indora in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, close to the Punjab border, is a highly revered and unique temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. What sets this ancient temple apart from other Shiva temples is the presence of two naturally formed vertical Shivlings—one representing Lord Shiva (about 8 feet tall) and the other Goddess Parvati (about 6 feet tall)—standing side by side. These Shivalingas are made of black stone and are believed to date back to the time of the Mahabharata. According to local legend, these lingas were worshipped by Rishi Bharadwaj and were discovered by Lord Ram’s army during the search for Sita.

The architecture of the temple reflects classic North Indian Nagara-style, with intricately designed domes, vibrant colors, and sculptures carved into the walls and entrance. The main doorway is beautifully adorned with symbolic paintings of elephants and Kalash, as shown in the image, signifying auspiciousness and divinity. The sanctum has a spiritual calmness, and the rituals performed by the priests follow Shaivite traditions with daily aartis, abhishek with water and milk, and offerings of belpatra, dhatura, and flowers.

The most significant festival celebrated here is Mahashivratri, during which thousands of devotees from Punjab, Himachal, and Jammu gather to witness the grand Shiv-Parvati Milan, a symbolic marriage ceremony of the two sacred Shivalingas. It is widely believed that the distance between the two Shivalingas varies slightly with seasons, symbolizing cosmic balance and energy. This phenomenon is revered by devotees as a divine mystery. Another local tradition is the Kathgarh Mela, which takes place annually and includes devotional music, spiritual discourses, langar (community meals), and a festive environment of unity and faith.

Surrounded by scenic hills and nestled in peaceful countryside, Kathgarh Mahadev Temple is not only a place of immense religious significance but also a serene spiritual retreat. The temple’s rich mythology, natural Shivling formation, and timeless traditions continue to attract pilgrims, saints, and seekers of truth, making it one of the most sacred Shaivite shrines in the region.
